Once upon a time there were 3 little pigs. And they decided it was time to move out of Momma Pig’s house and build their own.

Piggy #1

The first little pig (his name was Waldo Pig) really loved to work with wood. He went out to the forest and cut some really fine logs. Then he got himself a portable saw mill. The logs were all milled into lumber.

I don’t know if you’ve ever cut your own lumber before, but it needs to be stacked and dried for several months before you can use it. So Waldo needed to wait.

In the mean time, he worked at collecting rocks and other materials he would need to build his home. He was having a great time, but still living at home with Momma Pig.

George Pig, the second little pig, was much more eager to get out of the house. So he went out and bought a house. It was expensive and he was saddled with a mortgage that he’d have to carry for a long time.

But he had a house.

It wasn’t the house he would have liked to have. The kitchen wasn’t set up the way he wanted. And he didn’t like the fact that the bathroom was pink.

Sammy Pig didn’t want to buy a house that he didn’t like. He loved to do some of the planning and building. But he didn’t want to take months (or years) like Waldo was doing.

So he went out and found a plan that was close to what he wanted and then he modified it.

Once he had a plan, he went to the builder’s supply and bought the lumber and other materials he’d need. He started to build the house of his dreams.

Along the way he hired other people to help do the things he couldn’t do (or didn’t have time to do).

Before you know it, Sammy Pig had a beautiful new home.

The Moral of the Story

So, why are we talking about pigs and houses? I’m sure you’ve figured out that there is more than one way to build your business.

  • You can do everything yourself like Waldo did.
  • You can buy something that is already made like George did.
  • Or you can buy ready made pieces that you can adapt to your own needs like Sammy. And you can hire people to help you put it together.

This is true of all aspects of your business. And when you need information content for your business, whether it is for your web site, ezine, training materials or any other part of your business, you have those same 3 options.

Remember, PLR is a tool that you can use to build your business quickly and efficiently. It is one of many, but you need to learn how to use it properly.

How To Find PLR

How To Find PLRMaybe you’re still a bit leery. You think that PLR might be good for your business. But you need to know how to find PLR that will suit your needs.

Given the amount of products that are floating around the internet with reuse rights of some kind, you’d think it would be easy.

But it isn’t.

That’s because there is a lot of low quality PLR that is promoted out there.

If you’re a writer, then the low quality stuff still has some use as fodder for your creativity (provided it’s readable, which isn’t always the case). But if you want to be able to use the product with minor adjustments then you need something that is well written and researched as a starting point. And if you’re dealing with MRR, RR or similar rights, you can’t change it so it has to be good out of the box.

There is a lot of material that is available for free if you hang out at giveaway events and sign up to email lists. I get tons of the stuff that way. But it takes a lot of effort to sort through it all and figure out what will be useful.

Finding Good PLR

The best material will usually be behind the money curtain — that’s right, you’ll have to pay for it.

So the question becomes “Who do I trust?” If you’re paying for a ghostwriter, you can see the end result before you finalize the payment. But with PLR you have to pay up front and many providers have a “no returns” policy (for obvious reasons).

That means you need to do some homework. You’ll be putting your hard earned cash on the line so you want to be sure about it.

You’ll need to find a couple of trusted sources that you can go to. People with a track record for creating well researched, well written articles, eBooks, etc. Once you’ve found a few good sources you can go back to them for more when needed.

How Will You Know?

Your due diligence involves several different approaches.

  • Check out sources that you trust that promote the use of PLR (like LoneWolf’s LMA — hopefully 8=) and see who they recommend. But keep in mind that most of us are affiliates for the people we promote. Check the PLR Sources page here for a list of people I recommend.
  • Do a search for the provider in Google or Bing. Look at what people are saying about them. You’ll need to wade through some obvious sales pages to get to discussions.
  • Search for their name on forums like The Warrior Forum. This is also a great place to find new sources of PLR as many products are offered there at great prices.
  • See if the provider has samples. Many of them offer some free articles to give you an idea of the quality of their writing and whether it will fit with what you want to do. But, once again, they may have lower quality stuff hiding behind the “Buy” button. Your due diligence can help you find the ones that do this kind of stuff. Those who are burned will be vocal.
  • Finally, you’ll need to buy something to know for sure. The word of others can only get you so far. Eventually you need to see for yourself.

Most of the providers of PLR will also provide a lot of solid information about marketing online in their newsletters. You can learn a lot from them.[/stextbox]Once you’ve found a good source of content, you’ll want to make sure that you sign up for their newsletter so that you can be advised when new stuff is ready. That way you won’t have to be checking back all the time.

Once you’ve found a couple of great providers you can build up a fairly steady stream of content for your business. But remember that not every PLR provider has the same level of output. Some will produce new content every week or so. Others will be sporadic, with new content coming out with no pattern.

You also need to keep in mind that a content provider may work in several different niches. You are not always going to see PLR content that matches your needs.

With these 2 caveats in mind, you may want to expand your list of sources to minimize the possibility of running out of material to work with.

4 Common Misconceptions about PLR Content

Recently, in an interview, I was asked this question:

“Can you explode any misconceptions that stop people from using PLR content?”

Here is my answer.

There are four main myths that I run into regularly.

  1. The biggest misconception that people have is that all PLR is crap.
  2. The second biggest misconception is that ghostwriters are not good writers. We can even take that a step further and add that people assume they are stupid, taken advantage of, and/or they don’t speak English as their native language.
  3. The third misconception is that using PLR takes away from your expert status.
  4. The fourth misconception is that PLR and ghostwriting are somehow dishonest.

Let’s run through those one by one.

Myth #1: All PLR is Crap.

If you go back to about 2003, then I’d say that you are absolutely correct. Nearly all PLR at that time was junk. There may have been a few exceptions, but I wouldn’t touch most of that PLR content with a 10-foot pole.

We’ve made great strides in the last few years to raise the standards for what is acceptable and what is not in the PLR world. I’d like to think that I was one of the leaders in that movement.

Myth #2: Ghostwriters are Stupid.

I’ve got to tell you that I’ve worked with some ghostwriters who are brilliant in many ways. Oftentimes, they’re fabulous communicators, smart marketers, and hard working entrepreneurs. And, yes, they’re qualified to write quality information on many topics on the internet.

For instance, for a long time, I had a nurse writing my health PLR articles. I’ve also got a writer who graduated from Stanford University, who writes for several popular print magazines, and is a published author. Yes, she has her own book. And, another who had a career as a Political Speech Writer (before having children). That’s just three of my writers. They’re all amazing people, each with a variety of skills and life experience.

To assume they aren’t capable of writing quality content would be just silly.

I don’t just go to eLance.com and take the lowest bidder. To think that’s how all PLR sites work would certainly be a misconception.

Myth #3: You’re Not a “Real” Expert if you Use PLR.

The other misconception is that using PLR articles takes away your own value as the expert. That you are somehow cheating, plagiarizing, or that you’re a phony if you use PLR.

Business is all about cutting costs while increasing the bottom line. What better example is there than PLR content?

If you use PLR articles as drafts, they are delivered to you, ready for you, as the expert, to add your unique thoughts to them.

If you look at PLR like that – you can still keep your personality in your brand – and your sanity at the same time.

Myth #4: Using Ghostwriters or PLR is Cheating.

Most biographies in the bookstores are written by ghostwriters.

Most of the famous orations from our history were written by someone other than the public figure who gave the speech.

It’s not cheating to get help. It’s smart business.

3 Ways to Use PLR Effectively

Some feel that it is the scourge of the internet.

Others see it as a shining ray of hope for the overwhelmed marketer.

Both of them are right — and wrong!

The Problem with PLR

The biggest problem with PLR today is that it is not used properly. Too many marketers grab tons of articles, ebooks, videos and just put them out there. They don’t take any care to ensure that the content is accurate. They don’t bother to correct spelling, grammar or other mistakes. They don’t take the time to make it unique and stand out.

There is also a lot of really poor PLR out there. Some is written by non-writers or non-English speakers. So when these two collide, look out!

3 Ways to Use PLR Effectively

To avoid being part of the problem you need to learn how to use PLR effectively.

1) Start with the best PLR you can afford.

The better quality the base material, the better your results will be. Also, there will be less work involved in rewriting it — and you should still rewrite it!

The best stuff will usually be content that you buy (but not always). You can sometimes find good quality PLR as a free sample or part of a membership site. When you pay for PLR, look for a couple of things:

  • Is it limited? The fewer copies that are licensed, the more valuable it is.
  • Does it allow the licensee to sell PLR? This can dilute the value as more copies get out into the wild.
  • Are there restrictions on the use that will affect your plans for it? Many licenses restrict the types of sales you can use (e.g. no auction sites). Some also restrict giving the product away.

That doesn’t mean that the really crappy stuff you’ll find isn’t valuable. It just means that it will require much more work to make it usable. In some cases, it is best to use it for inspiration as you write your own. It can give you ideas about what to write about.

2) Verify the facts.

PLR is great in that the basic research has been done for you. But you’re putting your name on this, so make sure that you double check the accuracy. Reputable creators of PLR do good research, but you still don’t want to take a chance.

3) Rewrite it.

I know I’m harping on this a bit, but this is the key. If you don’t rewrite the content then it will be the same as all the other guys out there that didn’t rewrite it. Is that where you want to be?

Make the content your own. Add your own voice to it. When people see your version they should not be able to tell that it is the same as Bob’s or Mary’s down the block. This will keep the search engines happier with your site as well since they won’t see as much duplication.

Is PLR Right For You?

It boils down to a gut decision for you as a business owner.

Everyone needs content for their web sites, newsletters and other online (or even offline) channels. You need to have informative articles for your blog, article directories, email sequences, training courses, etc. You need landing pages for list building and sales. You need themes and software for your sites.

It boils down to content — tons of content.

4 Main Content Sources

So, how do you get content? There are 4 basic ways:

Produce your own.

If you are able to produce your own content in a timely fashion this is the absolute best way to go. You need to be comfortable with writing, speaking or being on camera to create articles, podcasts and videos.

If you are good at it, you will have unique content that has your unique voice. This helps you to stand out.

The flip side is that it all takes time. It is possible to write a 300 word article in 20 minutes. People do it all the time. But if you are really taking care in your work and doing some research, it will be much longer. The time to create video (even screen captures) also takes time.

It can also require extra software if you are getting into the podcasts and videos. This can cost money as well as the learning curve to get up to speed on it.

Hire a ghostwriter.

The second option is to outsource the work. Hire a professional to create the content for you. You will be the owner of the copyright and can even claim that you wrote it. That sounds a bit like lying to me, but it is very common in the literary world. You see it quite often when celebrities write their autobiographies.

You can find people to write articles at freelancing sites and the rates vary dramatically. Articles can be written by people in countries like India or the Phillipines quite cheaply. Or you can spend more to get them written by a local writer.

Either way, you need to make sure that you and your freelancer are on the same page with regards to what you want, when you want it and how much you will be paying.

You also need to watch out for freelancers who simply take existing articles (either PLR or not) and sell them to you as their own work. And some will sell the same article to several people.

Syndicate content.

Syndicated content is readily available at many article directories. Many bloggers will also allow you to syndicate their content.

Syndication means that you are allowed to use the content, but you cannot change it in any way. You must also attribute the source and the author.

You can syndicate some content for free, but remember that others can syndicate it as well, so you won’t be unique. It is also possible to pay for exclusive syndication rights for some content.

Licensed content.

This brings us to PLR, RR and MRR content.

Private Label Rights allows you to do things with the content that are very similar to what you can do with ghostwritten content. However, some licenses will restrict how you sell it and whether you can pass on the rights to others.

But the actual content can be changed in any way that you see fit to make it unique and have your personal twist.

Resell Rights (and Master Resell Rights) are similar except that you are not allowed to modify the content. You must use it as is (although some allows you to brand the content).

The biggest drawback to the various licenses is that the content is not unique — many other marketers will have access to the same content. At least with PLR you can make it unique with a little work.

The Bottom Line

So, you need to ask yourself “Should I use PLR in my business?” And that is a question that only you can answer.

You need to look at your content needs and determine which of the 4 sources of content will work for you. You will probably find a blend of the 4 sources which is just right for you.
